Lecture: Friends of Lebanon Resistance and Liberation Day Event

Resistance and Liberation Day has its origins in the May 2000 liberation of Southern Lebanon from a 22-year Israeli occupation.  But what is the significance of the concept of resistance in today’s world? It has been often said that “When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty.”  In this age of continual conflict, who decides where justice lies and how it should be achieved?  What, after all, is resistance?

The evening will feature: A Summer Not to Forget, short documentary film on the 2006 War on Lebanon, with director/producer Carol Mansour; Mr Abdul-Rahman Bizri, Mayor of Saida, Lebanon; Additional speakers to be announced.  Given the nature of the documentary and the length of the programme, we would advise that small children not attend this event. Media (including filming) welcome. Wheelchair accessible.

Lecture: SuperMedia: Saving Journalism So It Can Save The World

Charlie Beckett discusses how the world needs a 'good' news media to explain the conflicts, threats and opportunities that globalisation offers. And yet quality journalism and international coverage is under threat from new media and commercial pressures. Charlie Beckett spent 20 years working around the world for news organisations such as the BBC and Channel 4 News before founding the LSE's media think-tank POLIS, of which he is now a Director, in 2006.  In his new book, he argues that Networked Journalism, combining 'professional' journalism with public participation (blogging, wikis, crowd-sourcing, user generated content and the rest), can sustain the media business and offer huge social benefits. Is this another Internet fantasy, or the gateway to a new form of politics?

Egyptian-Gazan border

International Demonstration: Break the Siege of Gaza

The International Solidarity Movement announces a truly unique demonstration.  On 30 May 2008, people of conscience from around the world will gather in Egypt to break through to the imprisoned people living inside the Gaza Strip. People will attempt to enter Gaza in an act to break the murderous siege and to stand in solidarity with those inside.

Brutally imposed by the Israeli government since June 2007, the siege stands as a grave act of collective punishment.  This is a physical demonstration that the world’s people will not simply stand by while this atrocity is carried out, as the world’s governments do nothing.  It is time, then, to do ourselves what our governments have failed to do: break the siege of Gaza.  Click
